Basic Search - Essentials

E-mail Print PDF
Google search is simple yet powerful. In its most basic form, typing in a word or set of words in the search box and then pressing the button labeled "Google Search" will display a results page with a list of websites or webpages that are related to your search terms. These results are displayed in order to relevance. However, with the vast amount of information available on the world wide web, accurate results are better obtained with the following techniques and considerations:

Initial Search Term/Phrase

Start with a phrase that summarizes what you are looking for. If a word is generic, or if there is a lot of material on the subject, it is probably best to include multiple terms in your search phrase. For example:

Searching for a generic word like computer will most likely not display any relevant information. However, searching for appendicitis will most likely return an assortment of links containing the information you are looking for.

To take this a step further, if you are looking for a computer store, then searching for computer store will return more accurate results that just computer. However, even computer store is most likely too generic for accurate results. A better basic search option for this information may be adding a term for a city that you are looking for a computer store in. Keep in mind that there is no need to include 'and' in your searches, as Google by default includes all terms.

This is the most basic example of Google Search but feel free to try out these results in either Google Search box located above or below this article.
